The Red Eye Countess Elodie van Stiepelteen and Baron Odilon van Piependale finally decide to go on their honeymoon and ask Jommeke and his friends to look after Fifi in their castle. During their trip through India, the Countess and Odilon visit, among other things, a temple with a large Buddha statue known for its two red eyes. However, during their visit, they discover that one of the red eyes has disappeared. The local community is furious and wants to find the eye. Upon returning to the hotel, the Countess and Odilon receive a package from another tourist, a souvenir he was planning to pick up later that evening. The local guides later suspect the tourist of being the thief, but they don't find the eye with him. Nachar, the guide, decides to follow him anyway. Meanwhile, at the hotel, Odilon becomes seriously ill with "elephant fever," forcing the Countess and Odilon to immediately return home. The tourist arrives to pick up the package, but they have already left and accidentally take it home with them. However, the hotel gives the Countess's address to the tourist, and shortly after, to Nachar, who had followed the English tourist. A little later, the Countess and Odilon return home. They find the castle in complete chaos. Fifi, Pekkie, and Choco have turned everything upside down. The friends decide to help the Countess tidy up. In her luggage, they also find the tourist's package. It turns out to be the stolen red eye. The Countess and Odilon want the eye out of the house as soon as possible because they believe Odilon's illness is a punishment. Jommeke suspects there must be something special about the eye and has it examined by Professor Gobelijn. He discovers it is a giant ruby. Back at the castle, the English tourist arrives and demands the package back. He confesses to the theft but demands it back. However, the Countess refuses to give it back. When Nachar also shows up with threats, Jommeke, Filiberke, and Flip decide to travel to India to return the eye. The tourist is led to believe that the eye was thrown into the pond, and Nachar is told that the eye has returned to India. When Nachar refuses to believe the countess, they decide to hold him captive under threat of Fifi and let him help clean the pond. In India, the friends manage to enter the temple unnoticed through a ruse and put the eye back into the statue. The local community is delighted, and Nachar is informed. He thanks the countess and the friends for their honesty and, upon his return, encounters the thief, who is still searching the water for the eye.
