A significant portion are members of the Ismāʿīlī sect. Prior to the 19th century, Chitral was a centre for slave trade in the region. Khowar, the language of the Khos, the dominant tribe in the locality, is the lingua franca. The Chitralis are fine horsemen and excel at the game of polo.
